Juttla is At War With Satan
Juttla ‘At War With Satan’ (Eastern Pressure Records)
Review by RAHUL VERMA - Sunday, October 19, 2008

Midlands-based producer Juttla has explored hip hop, breaks and d'*'b for a decade but on At War With Satan, he offers an excursion into spooky, widescreen bass. Gunshots and cocking triggers set a sinister mood, while an eerie cover of the James Bond Theme (The Spy) and echoing low-end frequencies pinned to off-kilter tabla patterns heighten the unsettling atmosphere. Eastern melodies, vocals, sitars and reggae chords gurgle and splutter as they're sucked into a vortex of gnarly basstronica. AWWS draws heavily on once protected genres - breaks, dubstep and d'*'b (as well as electronica) - but thanks to a thawing in relations between these scenes, it represents the emergence of a generation united by bass.
